Zelda: Breath of the Wild Has an Official Place in the Series' Timeline… Sort Of

It’s up to you to decide exactly where it fits.

The Legend of Zelda series timeline has recently been updated to include Breath of the Wild, but it’s not as revelatory as you might think.

Nintendo’s Japanese website has been updated with the new timeline, and Breath of the Wild sits at the end, unconnected to any of the other three timelines. In an interview with Famitsu, (translated by Siliconera), Breath of the Wild director Hidemaro Fujibayashi says exactly which timeline it rounds out is “up  to the player’s imagination.”

“Hyrule’s history changes with time,” explained series producer Eiji Aonuma. “When we think of the next game and what we want to do with it, we might think, ‘Oh, this’ll fit well’, and place it neatly into the timeline, but sometimes we think, ‘Oh crap’, and have to change the placement. Actually, the decided history has been tweaked many times.”

Fujibayashi calls this rejigging of Hyrule’s history a New Translation, saying that “strictly speaking, [the history doesn’t change] but rather new information and truths come to light.”

Back in June, Nintendo and Dark Horse Comics released The Legend of Zelda: Encyclopedia, a 328-page book exploring Hyrule’s lore, creatures, and pretty much everything else you might associate with the series.

You can pick up the standard edition for $39.99 and a deluxe edition for $79.99 that features unique packaging modeled after a gold NES cartridge.

But you don’t have to pore through it yourself for juicy Legend of Zelda tidbits. We rounded up the 20 of the most interesting facts we discovered while reading through The Legend of Zelda: Encyclopedia so you don’t have to.
